Simple Ingredients

Listen, you can do all kinds of tricks to make this fancier, but honestly, it shines in its simplicity. I am a firm believer that too many recipes nowadays try to be too showy and add fancy ingredients that are not necessary. That is fine for days you have time to go the extra mile and have to budget for it, but today we are just talking about easy fried goat cheese. Goat cheese, panko bread crumbs, dried herbs, eggs, flour, and olive oil. That’s all you need for a mind-blowing appetizer.

  • Goat cheese: I like to use the 10 oz logs of chevre from Costco. They are a great value and taste wonderful.
  • Panko: in case you have not heard of Panko-style bread crumbs yet, they are Japanese-style bread crumbs perfect for frying because they are extremely crispy/crunchy!
  • Herbs: I always have dried Italian herbs in my pantry so that’s what I use, but feel free to experiment because I doubt you can go wrong here.

How to Cook Fried Goat Cheese

This might be the shortest, cutest little recipe ever. The process is so easy and quick and produces a crunchy exterior and the warm, creamy, tangy interior of the goat cheese. I like to pop the log of goat cheese in the freezer for maybe 15 minutes before I am going to slice it so that it will not just fall apart when I try to make the cuts. While it is in the freezer, prepare your dipping station with:

  • Bowl 1: ½ cup of flour
  • Bowl 2: a beaten egg
  • Bowl 3: 1 cup panko, 1 tbsp herbs

*Note: for a little saltiness, add maybe a ¼ tsp salt to the flour mixture. Alternatively, maybe a couple of tablespoons of parmesan cheese to the panko mix if you have some.

And then…a log of goat cheese, bread crumbs, and eggs await to be made into fried goat cheese

Once the dipping station is complete, pull out the goat cheese from the freezer and begin slicing ½ inch slices. Here’s a tip: keep a wet, warm kitchen rag by you and wipe the knife after each slice or two to clean the blade and warm it so that it slices a neater disc of cheese. Once that log is all sliced, just dip one by one the discs of cheese into the dipping bowls in this order: flour, egg, panko. Set each one aside and continue dipping until they are all finished.

Now grab a pan to cook in. I like my trusty, 12-inch cast-iron skillet but use what you have. Any size will do obviously, but you might just do more batches if all you have is a small skillet. Once your pan is hot, add enough oil to cover the bottom of the skillet completely and when it is hot and ready to go, just carefully add in your little slices of goat cheese. Be careful not to overcrowd the skillet so as to not bring down the temperature of the oil too much.

Quick and Easy Fried Goat Cheese Snack!

These babies fry quickly so do not leave them alone! All they take is maybe two minutes on each side. They are ready to flip over when the crumb coating has turned a golden brown. After they have fried on each side, remove them to a plate and enjoy them fresh out of the skillet! Don’t wait until they have cooled too long or you won’t get the full effect of the melty-creamy cheese!

You can serve these with a dip if you would like such as marinara, ranch, or some kind of sweet chili sauce, but honestly, they are perfect on their own! This recipe can be adjusted easily to make more or less depending on if you plan to feed a crowd or just want a quick and easy guilty pleasure for yourself.   crispy fried goat cheese fresh from the skillet

Easy Fried Goat Cheese

Print Recipe
Quick and easy fried goat cheese is crispy on the outside and soft and warm on the inside. This will be a favorite snack or appetizer!
Servings 4 people

Ingredients

  • 4 Tbsp Olive Oil enough to cover the bottom of the skillet
  • 10 oz Goat Cheese Log I use Chevre cheese
  • 1 cup Panko Bread Crumbs
  • 1/2 cup Flour
  • 1 Egg beaten
  • 1 Tbsp Dried Italian Herbs
  • 1/4 tsp Salt or alternatively to add saltiness: use 2 Tbsp finely grated Parmesan cheese.

Instructions

  • Place goat cheese in the freezer for 15 minutes to harden slightly while you prepare your dipping station.
  • Prepare flour and salt in one bowl, the beaten egg in another bowl, and a third bowl with the panko and herbs (and parmesan cheese if using instead of salt).
  • Remove the goat cheese from the freezer and slice into 1/2 inch discs. Wipe the knife with a rag of warm water after each cut to enable a clean and easier slice. It is okay if some of the discs need to be patted and reshaped after you slice them!
  • Dip each disc of goat cheese first into the flour, then egg, then panko mixture and be sure to coat all sides. Set them aside.
  • Pour enough oil in the skillet to cover the bottom and heat the oil over medium-high heat until hot.
  • Gently add the goat cheese to the oil and fry to a golden brown and then flip to fry the other side. They cook fast so check them and don't leave them! They might take about 2 minutes or less on each side.
  • Remove from the pan and enjoy!
